Chapter Nine
âIt is so good to see you,â Lana said to the handsome blond man. He circled his arm around her waist and pulled her in for another kiss.
âIâve missed you, darling,â he said to Lana. Even over the noise of the club, Patricia could hear that he spoke in an English accent.
âIâve been so busy with work,â said Lana. âIâve been going crazy missing you.â
âI understand,â he replied. He ran a hand through his stylish haircut as he watched Lana. âI just wish you didnât have to work so hard these days. Your stupid boss works you too hard.â
Patricia perked up her ears when she heard this. So the young DJ knew about Jeff Jones. Was there going to be some kind of confrontation? She hoped Brian was ready to step in, if that happened. Yet the young man seemed oddly calm when he mentioned Lanaâs boss. Patricia was confused.
âHeâs not stupid. And you know I would spend all my time with you if I could,â Lana replied. âEverything has been a mess since Peterâs death.â
âLet me get you a drink.â The young man got the bartenderâs eye and ordered two gin and tonics. He handed one to Lana.
âTo Peter,â he said, raising his glass. Lana seemed to get choked up. The young man lowered his drink and put his arms around Lana. Lana rested her head on his shoulder. She seemed to be crying.
âI have to stop this,â said Lana, taking a deep breath after a while.
âItâs okay,â said the man gently. âIâm here for you, love.â
âIt just doesnât seem fair,â said Lana. âI wait all day to see you and we end up talking about Peter again.â
âItâs okay, Lana. I know how much he meant to you,â the man replied.
âHe really did,â said Lana. âI donât know where I would be without him.â
âHe saw in you exactly what I do,â came the response. âHe knew how good you are at your job, and that you would be even better when he helped you get a new job with bigger responsibilities. He believed in you.â
âYes, he did,â Lana responded, wiping her eyes. âI was just talking to Jim and Saul at the other club. Jim wanted to talk to me about something.â
âReally? What did he want?â
âWell, he told me I could come and work for him if I wanted to,â said Lana.
âThat is fantastic, babe. Why didnât you tell me when you got here? This is huge news. You donât have to work for that other Jeff anymore. We should celebrate!â At the excitement in the young manâs voice, Lana jumped off her barstool and hugged him. That other Jeff? What on earth, wondered Patricia. As Patricia watched, Lana gave him another big kiss.
âI love you so much. Letâs go dance before your DJ set starts,â Lana said. âWill you let me sit in the booth with you tonight?â
âOnly if you answer me one question. Am I your favorite Jeff?â teased the handsome blond, leaning close to her.
âYouâre the only Jeff that matters,â Lana replied with a smile.
